2 Books For Beginner ESL Students

The current student I am teaching is in grade 10 and he came to Canada just less than a year ago. Trying to learn a whole another language at16 isn't a simple task at all, at it requires not only one's own hard work, but they may use all the support they can get to improve as soon as possible.

As his private English tutor, I am testing out many study materials which I believe will benefit him the most. Obviously, I am not randomly picking out the materials, but I am carefully reading the reviews, looking at some of their sample pages if available, and ensuring that it isn't too easy nor too hard for the student's current level of English.

I would like to share the 2 materials I am currently using that I believe are not only helping my student improve his English, but he is actually now more engaged in my session compared to the time when I only had only the reading workbook and vocabulary book. Here are the materials:

1. How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay Step-by-Step - Jay Matthews

This book is very simple and straight-forward. It is a material I'd recommend to both beginner and intermediate level ESL students.

Pros:

  • Simple and straight-forward

  • Lots of application questions which you can do together with your students

  • Covers all of the basics of essay-writing

  • Good price

  • The book itself isn't crazy long: less than 100 pages

Cons:

  • May be too simple for advanced level ESL students

2. Daily Life English Expressions to Know - Jackie Bolen

Jackie Bolen, the author, has plenty of experience with ESL students. He taught in Korea for over 10 years, and in this book he's outlined the very basic yet useful English expressions which ESL students of all levels can refer to (mostly beginner-level, though)

Pros:

  • Very simple and easy to follow

  • Each chapter consists of 10-15 English expressions, followed by a review page which is a quick quiz on what you learned so far

  • Good price

  • Not crazy long

Cons:

  • May be too simple for intermediate or advanced level ESL students

So, if you are an English teacher or an ESL student looking for some credible resources that will cover the basics of English. I recommend you start with these materials. Again, they are quite simple so it would be suitable for beginner to intermediate level ESL students. Best of luck with your journey with English!
