Where is The Best Study Spot?

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

This topic can be up for debate because everyone has different preferences. Some say they can focus better in a designated silent area we often see in school or public libraries. Some say they like to study at home as they feel most comfortable and familiar with the place. But, I am more of a cafe person that likes a bit of the background noise to keep me from falling asleep. As I've been to all sorts of places to study, I'd like to share some pros and cons of each study spot.

1. Library

Pros

It’s by far my students' most favourite place to study. The biggest reason is that it sets up the perfect atmosphere to study as everyone else is doing the same thing, and it provides a rather quiet environment (obviously depends on the library) allowing for better focus. Also, pretty much everything in the library is free and you have access to books you may use to aid your lectures and courses. Finally, there is generally a silent area ideal for those who want zero noise when studying.

One more thing, most libraries will have electrical outlets for you to charge your phones and laptops!

Cons

It is not ideal for those who tend to study better in a more lively place as the library is generally quieter without much activity. Some of my students also say that the monotonous atmosphere makes them fall asleep easily. Another complaint is that hours are much shorter (especially public libraries) and thus don’t accommodate those who like to study at nighttime.

2. Café

Pros

It’s my personal top choice for studying because they provide ample space to study and there is a bit of activity and background noise to keep you from sleeping. Also, cafes tend not to have a monotonous atmosphere as they are more dynamic with their interior design, and this also keeps you from falling asleep. Moreover, they provide food and drinks in case you get hungry so that you don’t have to go elsewhere to grab food.

Cons

They might have a time limit for how long you can stay. I’ve seen some places with a 2-hour limit which is not nearly sufficient for effective studying. There may also be a minimum order you need to make in order to stay and use their Wifi. Also, food and drinks can be more pricey than what we normally get. Moreover, it is not ideal for those who prefer absolute silence when studying as there may be many distractions.

3. Home

Pros

It’s probably the most comfortable spot because you are most familiar with the place. It is ideal for those who don’t want any outside distractions, and prefer to maximize their privacy. You can be in your comfortable clothing, utilize the extra monitors you might have, as well as be in your comfortable posture. Also, you don’t have to worry about having your belongings stolen while you are taking your washroom break. I’ve seen some of my students and peers who prefer their homes over anywhere else.

Cons

For me personally, home provides too much comfort that it hinders me from studying effectively. Also, I find that it is a place of most distractions because you have instant access to food, your bed, and computers or television which is certainly more enticing than studying. Moreover, it generally doesn’t set up that perfect atmosphere for studying because you don’t have others who are doing the same thing as you.

4. Outdoors

Pros

It is not the most common place for studying, but there are some who study outdoors to enjoy the nature, fresh air, and the sun. It gives that refreshing feel where you feel constantly energized to study for hours at a time. Outdoors also provides a bit of background noise which helps you stay awake for the most part.

Cons

First things first, you may not have immediate access to a washroom which leaves you looking for one and takes up your time. Outdoors is also weather-dependent, so you may not be able to study outdoors consistently if the weather is not optimal. Finally, there may not always be a solid desk or table for you to lay out your books and your laptop to study more comfortably.

Final Words

Frankly, there is no definitive answer for which study spot is best. But it is worthwhile to try different study spots to find the place where you can focus most and study most effectively. I've shared the top 4 favourite study spots based on my students and peers, and my personal favourite is the cafe. As I've shared earlier, it is because there is just enough activity, background noise and dynamic interior design that will keep me from falling asleep. Also, because you must spend some money on their drinks or food, it motivates you to study more intensely in order not to lose out on the money you've paid. All in all, consider these pros and cons I've shared with you to help select the study spot of your choice!
